Compression Stocking Fittings
• In-Home / In-Store Stocking FittingWe offer in-home stocking fittings for individuals unable to leave their homes. Appointments are available in the morning, as this is the optimal time for stocking measurements. All fittings are performed by a certified fitter. To book an appointment, call us at (403) 874-8787.For in-home measurements, it is helpful to provide your shoe size and approximate measurements of your ankle and calf, so we can bring a suitable selection of stockings.Stockings come in various pressures, colours, fabrics, and styles, including closed-toe and open-toe options. Open-toe stockings are typically easier to apply, and we also offer stocking donners to assist with putting them on and taking them off.
Trim toenails regularly; seek a professional trained in nail and footcare if you are not able to do this for yourself.
Elevate legs as often as possible; elevating your legs above the level of your heart is best.
Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes that fit your feet well.
Limit long periods of time in direct sunlight.
Wear loose fitting clothing; avoid clothing that binds at the hips or groin.
Limit salty foods and try to drink at least 6–8 glasses of water each day.
Maintain a healthy weight; exercise regularly.
Limit alcoholic drinks.
Stop smoking!
Avoid standing for long periods of time. When you stand still, blood flow slows down and can cause the veins in your legs to fill up and swell.
Be smoke-free. Smoking or living in a smoking environment can reduce circulation in your legs.
Control your diet. Follow the Canada Food Guide and eat a balanced diet of fruits, grains, vegetables, milk products and protein with reduced sodium (salt) intake.
Get active! Exercise gets your muscles working and increases the blood flow to your legs and heart. Need help getting started? Consult a health care professional, like a registered nurse, occupational therapist or physiotherapist.
Avoid hot baths or showers. The heat can cause your legs to swell so it is best to use warm water. Protect your skin by patting it dry – it is gentler than rubbing. Moisturizing after your shower or bath will allow your skin to absorb the moisture. Note: Moisturize at night as lotion can break down stockings.
To qualify for compression stockings from AADL, you must:• be an Alberta resident;
• have a valid and active Alberta Personal Health Card;
• be assessed by an AADL authorizer.AADL provides some funding for up to three pairs of compression stockings every 12 months to Albertans who meet CEAP criteria C4 or C5 or with chronic lymphedema. Funding is provided only when leg swelling has been reduced.Compression stockings should be worn daily to provide support unless you are sick or spending the day in bed. They should be removed at night. If your legs continue to swell, return to a doctor or healthcare professional.The program does not provide funding for:• simple varices
• swelling
• reduced/achy feeling in the legs
• Arterial Insufficiency
• pre- or post-surgery needs
• unresolved wound
• short-term intervention such as treatment for deep vein thrombosis
• problems related to blood pressure (high or low)
• osteoarthritis
• complications from pregnancy, such as swelling
• clients with a family history of chronic venous insufficiency/lymphedema and are looking for funding for prevention
Common Questions
The AADL authorizer conducts assessments at community health clinics, home care offices, regional health authorities, Community Aids to Independent Living offices, or in hospitals. During the assessment, they will check for leg swelling, circulation, skin discoloration, and take leg pulses.
If you qualify for AADL compression stockings, the authorizer will provide you with an authorization form and any additional information you need. You'll also receive a list of approved AADL vendors in your area where you can obtain your stockings.
The assessment and authorization process must be completed before you can receive your compression stockings. Typically, there is a 4-6 week wait from the time of your assessment until you can pick up your stockings.
Visit one of the AADL-approved vendors from the list provided by your AADL authorizer. You cannot purchase your compression stockings from unauthorized vendors or regular department stores.
Be sure to bring the authorization form given to you and present it to the vendor.
AADL vendors do not assess or authorize clients for compression stockings, but if your AADL authorizer did not measure your legs, trained staff at the vendor will handle the measurements for you.
To ensure proper fit and support from your compression stockings, visit the vendor early in the morning when leg swelling is minimal. If your legs are swollen, they will need to be elevated for at least 45 minutes before measurements can be taken.
The AADL vendor will provide you with several brands to try on. Compression stockings come in three lengths: below the knee, thigh-high, and pantyhose. Knee-high stockings are the most common and are suitable for most medical conditions.
Your healthcare professional will determine the appropriate length of compression stockings based on your medical needs.
Funding for pantyhose is only provided if your leg vein issues extend into the groin area. If you prefer pantyhose but don't qualify, you'll need to pay the difference between the two lengths.
Before taking a pair home, you should be able to put on and remove the stockings on your own. If you're unable to do so, the vendor will contact your authorizer.
Please note: Compression stockings are non-refundable for sanitary reasons, unless there has been an incorrect fitting.
AADL provides coverage for up to three pairs of ready-made compression stockings every 12 months. Initially, you'll be given one pair to ensure proper fit and comfort. After two to three weeks, you will be reassessed and, if appropriate, receive your additional pairs.
Under the program, clients are responsible for paying 25% of the cost to the AADL vendor, while AADL covers the remaining 75% directly with the vendor. Low-income clients may qualify for cost-share exemptions—please consult your AADL authorizer for more information.
The AADL program sets a benchmark price for compression stockings, and each vendor must offer a product at this price. If you choose a higher-priced brand or different length, you will be responsible for paying the difference between the benchmark price and your selection.
AADL does not reimburse or cover the cost of compression stockings purchased before receiving authorization from an AADL authorizer.
Caring for your stockings
Compression stockings should be hand-washed daily. Avoid wringing them out or using a washer or dryer. Instead, press out excess water by placing them between towels.Hang or lay flat to dry. Follow the care instructions in your product brochure for more details. Note: Moisturize your legs at night, as lotion can break down the stocking fibers.If you're having trouble putting on or removing your stockings, contact your AADL authorizer or vendor. They may recommend stocking aids, or a family member can assist. Wearing rubber gloves and keeping your nails trimmed can help prevent tears or holes.

After you receive your first pair of compression stockings, an AADL authorizer may contact you and ask the following questions:
Are you wearing your compression stockings every day?
Are you able to put on and take off your compression stockings?
Do your compression stockings fit?
Does your leg swelling continue to be reduced?

Friends Of Ostomates distributes these products all over the world to people in need. We will arrange for pickup or you may send it to our shipping office.

• Donation Incontinence & WoundcareSince Friends of Ostomates only distributes ostomy products to people in need, we utilize other channels for products like Catheters, Diapers and Wound care. If you are a nurse or healthcare professional that is doing health work overseas, please feel free to contact us about any Wound care and Incontinence products that have been donated to us. We will pass them along to you to take on your health campaign over seas. We will arrange for pickup or you may send it to our shipping office.
